As a business coach, I get to observe business owners and how they operate. One of the ways that successful business owners achieve their goals is by increasing the amount of time they spend doing deep work. This means they are focusing deeply ON their business, not just working IN their business
The good news is that focusing on deep work is a habit that can be developed. One of the best ways to foster a habit of doing deep work, and thereby increase your overall productivity, is by creating a daily or weekly routine to help you stay on track.
To get started, consider the following 9 Tips for Success:
Tip 1: Identify your peak productivity hours.
When are you the most alert and focused? Schedule your deep work tasks for these times.
Tip 2: Prioritize your tasks. Not all tasks are created equal. Focus on the most important or urgent things and limit your deep work sessions to complete those tasks. Tip 3: Batch similar tasks together. To stay focused and maximize valuable energy, group similar projects together and avoid switching tasks too often. Tip 4: Automate repetitive tasks. Take a moment to identify the tasks that slow you down because of their repetitive nature and then automate them. This will free you to focus on the important things that demand the most energy.
Tip 5: Minimize distractions.
When it is time to get “in the zone,” find a quiet place to work where you won't be interrupted by noise, people, or notifications. Turn off your phone, close your email, and put away any other distractions.
Tip 6: Set clear goals for each session.
What do you want to accomplish in each deep work session? Writing down a clear goal or to-do list will help you stay focused and avoid getting sidetracked.
Tip 7: Take breaks.
It is important to take regular and periodic breaks during deep work sessions to avoid mental burnout. Get up and move around every half hour and take a longer break every hour or two.
Tip 8: Reward yourself!
After successfully completing a deep work session, take some time to celebrate yourself! Give yourself a small reward or take a few minutes to do something enjoyable. This will help you stay motivated and provide an incentive to make deep work a habit.
Tip 9: Take care of yourself.
Make sure to get enough sleep every night, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. This physical aspect will help your mind stay sharp and focused.
As you put each of these 9 Tips into practice, also consider setting yourself up for daily success by structuring a regular routine to help you maintain your focus.
Consider the following as an example:
Morning Routine:
Wake up early and meditate to prepare for the day.
Exercise or go for a walk for 30 minutes.
Eat a healthy breakfast.
Focus on deep work tasks for 2-3 hours.
Afternoon Routine:
Take a break for lunch.
Answer emails and do other administrative tasks.
Focus on another deep work session for 1-2 hours.
Evening Routine:
Spend time with family and friends.
Enjoy a healthy meal for dinner.
Relax and unwind before bed.
Of course, the routine that works best for you may look very different than the one provided. The most important thing is to develop a schedule that fits your needs and preferences and stick to it as much as possible.
